Losing Myself →

August 23, 2016 by Luke Finch

Losing Myself is the Irish entry to the Biennale Architettura 2016. The project is a a puzzling projection that simulates what it’s like to live with dementia and shows the contrast between the architect's intention for a building and its subsequent inhabitation.

"The title of our project, ‘Losing Myself’ is drawn from the principle that architects have a responsibility in our designs to imagine the experiences of others. We have tried to develop a process of drawing through which we can imaginatively inhabit the minds of people with dementia, whose view of the world is not immediately clear to us. The drawing presents the fragmented and overlapping perceptions of people with dementia, rather than a representation of the building as a static architectural object. The installation imagines the ways in which dementia might affect an individual’s ability to synthesise and navigate their environment, based upon our observations and our conversations with experts and people with personal experience of the condition."

I've been a fan of Jack's work for many years now and I've have always been inspired by his illustrations and colour choices. Over the years, his style has evolved immensely but still remains distinctive and captivating to look at.

Flex @ Nike X158 →

June 27, 2016 by Luke Finch

"Flex" is an interactive light installation – inspired by Nature and it is an artistic interpretation of flexibility & movement. It portrays innovation, strength, dynamism and the theme – Super Natural.

"Flex" is part of Nike's celebration of Shanghai initiative – Nike X158 flagship store.
The metaphor of the idea comes from a simple floating line and form that reflect a study of deformation, flow and morphing sequences. The lighting system is concealed under the structure and programmed to perform a dynamic and intuitive lighting responds according to the body movements of the viewers within the installation.

Death Drives →

June 24, 2016 by Luke Finch

Illustrator and typographer Alex Trochut synthesizes illustration and lettering like no other. The expressive, richly ornamented typography he creates ooze fluidity in which movement is practically palpable. One of the most sought after talents, he has created knockout work for the likes of Wired and The New York Times as well as clients including Adidas and Coca-Cola. We met the 29-year-old, Barcelona-based whiz kid at his studio to talk about visuals, identities, and the legitimacy of legibility.

Transparency Report →

June 23, 2016 by Luke Finch

Everything we see is viewed through a series of transparencies, beginning with the lens of the eye. For David Spriggs, transparency, whether optical or metaphorical, is the key to understanding the intricate relationship between vision and power. In his newest exhibition, ‘Transparency Report’, Spriggs uses transparency both as the subject and as the medium for his art.

Sawdust →

June 22, 2016 by Luke Finch

One of my favourite design studios to flourish over the last few years is the London based Sawdust studio created by Jonathan Quainton and Rob Gonzalez. They specialise in bespoke and innovative typography, brand display typefaces, visual identities and image-creation for clients such as Nike, Wired and The New York Times.

At the heart of what they do is a desire to create work that is both explorative and beautifully crafted. Above all else we retain a deeply rooted conviction to not only deliver design that is effective but that exceeds our client’s expectations.

June 21, 2016 by Luke Finch

A series of WebGL particle demos created by Edan Kwan, a creative technologist specialising in real-time animation. Originally from Hong Kong, he now works as a freelancer in the UK.

Particle Love features all demos that were part of Edan's WebGL learning process, which enabled him to understand the limitations with shaders. The demos include some interesting graphics techniques he always wanted to try out like SDF particle physics with Leap Motion, real-time 3D meta-ball rendering, multi-directional motion blur, etc.

Hedonist Monk →

June 01, 2016 by Luke Finch

Hitesh Singhal is the 2015 Adobe Design Achievement Awards winner in the category Exhibition Design for this installation.

"In an age where we deny ourselves nothing and refuse to make any personal sacrifice, the hedonist monk lives his life in dichotomy. The monk achieves salvation by dedicating his life to others, yet the hedonist seeks freedom through self-satisfaction. Will his path lead to transcendence, or travesty? The installation is the shrine of the hedonist monk. It uses the vernacular of a monk but communicates the ideology of a hedonist. The monk meditates on words 'Admire, Desire, Acquire'."

A toy building brick can be whatever you imagine it to be, or even something you've never imagined. Braille Bricks is an experiment that transforms these bricks into a tool capable of encouraging creativity, helping blind children learn to read and write. It also encourages the inclusion of children with or without visual impairment.

Blueprint →

May 26, 2016 by Luke Finch

UVA have created "Blueprint" an installation embraces the relationship and parallels between art and science, creating compositions through the mathematical principles of logic that underpin life.

Exploring analogies between DNA and computer code, UVA have created the Blueprint series; works that pair genetics and code as the blueprints of artificial and natural systems. As the work slowly changes over time, patterns fluctuate between varying degrees of complexity. Blueprint uses the basic concepts of evolution to create an ever-transitioning image. With cells literally transferring their genes to their adjoining others, colour flows like paint across the canvas.

Drawing up a unique colourful composition every minute, Blueprint presents the unlimited outcome that results from a single algorithm; a single set of rules.
