SkyCanvas →

September 12, 2016 by Luke Finch

A Japanese company called ALE Co is bidding to handle the pyrotechnics at the opening ceremony of Japan's 2020 Olympics, and the key to its pitch is that it isn’t just planning on using fireworks like everyone else, it wants to fill the sky with hundreds of colorful shooting stars. If it gets the nod, this display would be visible from far outside Tokyo, up to 100 kilometers (62 miles) away. A meteor of such high apparent brightness would be potentially dangerous, but the company says that’s not a concern with its chemical payload.

CONVERGENCE @ Signal Festival →

September 12, 2016 by Luke Finch

NONOTAK studio is the collaboration between the illustrator Noemi Schipfer and the architect musician Takami Nakamoto. Commissioned by the Architect Bigoni-Mortemard to create a mural in the lobby of a public housing building in Paris, NONOTAK was created in late 2011.

The simple geometric structure of the audiovisual installation Convergence is formed by LED light rods embedded in the industrial atmosphere of an eight-meter tunnel made from three storage containers. The continuous repetition of the “X” creates the staff of a choreography of light, as twenty-three blue Xes form a minimalist corridor of light that plays with depth perception. This X motif in its representation evoking a variety of associations such as the mathematical symbol for multiplication or the designation of a location on a map.

Zen Garden by Sam Songailo →

September 09, 2016 by Luke Finch

The re-activation of an industrial warehouse as part of Adelaide’s burgeoning arts scene has resulted in this dynamic installation, a three-dimensional drawing. Leanne Amodeo reports.

Sam Songailo intended to invest his installation with a sense of reflection and calm, and he succeeds. But any suggestion Zen Garden is solely concerned with nature and meditation is inaccurate. There’s an inherent grittiness in Songailo’s line work; it acts as a reminder that this space is actually anything but a Zen garden.

Pixel Wave →

September 08, 2016 by Luke Finch

Miguel Chevalier's oeuvre is experimental and multidisciplinary. Taking references from the history of art and reformulating them using computer tools, his works investigate and explore recurrent themes such as nature and artifice, flows and networks, virtual cities and ornate designs. His images are a rich source of insights into ourselves and our relationship with the world.

"Pixels Wave” is a giant light carpet that will fill the floor inside the National Design Center.
Various “multicolored graphic scenes,” following one upon another in random fashion, are composed of such symbolic motifs from the digital universe as pixels, 0s and 1s (symbolic representations of binary code), mathematical symbols (+, x, and -), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.

She makes use of sculpture, video, and light to create works that illuminate our notions of personal identity and community.

Dance of Koi and People →

September 02, 2016 by Luke Finch

Created by TeamLab in Japan, where people can walk into the water and the movement of the koi is influenced by the presence of people in the water and also other koi. When the fish collide with people they turn into flowers and scatter. The trajectory of the koi is determined by the presence of people and these trajectories trace lines on the surface of the water.

The work is rendered in real time by a computer program, it is neither a pre-recorded animation nor on loop. The interaction between the viewer and the installation causes continuous change in the artwork. Previous visual states can never be replicated, and will never reoccur.

Forms of Finance →

September 01, 2016 by Luke Finch

Field have created mesmerizing visuals of moving sculptures, casting the complexity of global trading into newfound and suggestive shapes.

Financial market data and global economic parameters were used as inputs to drive procedural and parametric models; their aesthetic inspired by high-performance architecture.

The print and motion assets form the entire range of brand visuals for an algorithmic trading company. The forms and their behaviour illustrate the processes that inform their decision-making: macro-economic indicators, exponential correlations, social and political factors.

Stephen Knapp's Lightpaintings →

August 31, 2016 by Luke Finch

Stephen Knapp has been making work that is transformed by light for over thirty years, producing vibrant light installations he refers to as paintings. These large-scale works utilize minimal tools, harnessing simply light and dichroic glass to throw a multitude of colors against the walls and room.

The installations are not sketched out beforehand or programmed by computer, but rather created during the installation process as Knapp moves intuitively to choreograph his intricate light patterns.
